Back in September 2009, a major disaster hit the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station in Russia.
Basically a giant case of water hammer physically lifting several of the turbines off their mountings. Seventy four deaths.
A few days ago, the fascinating website English-Russia posted some more photos of the plant now that it is winter. Here are four of them -- lots more at the site.
The website said that they were expecting repairs to take ten years if it was able to be repaired at all.
The spring floods are coming in a few months and if they are not able to regulate the flow of water, things will get interesting very fast...
