From the Daily Express:
What is Hogmanay? How is New Year’s Eve celebrated in Scotland?
Hogmanay is the Scottlish New Year’s Eve celebration and for many Scots is more important than Christmas Day – which only became a public holiday in Scotland in 1958 after being effectively banned by the Protestant Reformation for 400 years.
The holiday dates back to the Vikings, who threw wild parties the celebrate the winter solstice in late December.
The Norse invaders began to incorporate elements of the Gaelic Samhain festival, which also contributed to the Twelve Days of Christmas – or the Daft Days as they became known in Scotland.
Would not mind being in Edinburgh tonight - maybe add that to the bucket list with a coulpe weeks in Iceland on the way.
