Knew there was a reason I always felt unsafe

Bought an eBike two years ago and it is a lot of fun to ride but I feel unsafe on it.  Planning to sell it next spring.
And yeah - same for regular bicycles.  Rode them a lot in Seattle but never comfortable.
This report makes a lot of sense - from United Press International:

Bike riding causes 4 in 5 sports-linked spinal injuries in U.S.
Football and other contact sports get a lot of attention for their injury hazards. But for most adults, bike riding is the biggest back-breaker, a new study suggests.

Of more than 12,000 sports-related spinal injuries among U.S. adults, researchers found that a full 81% were due to bicycling mishaps.

The injuries mostly included vertebral fractures, often in the neck but also in the middle and lower back. Some cyclists sustained potentially paralyzing trauma to the spinal cord as well.

After biking, the study found, skiing and snowboarding were the most common culprits, accounting for 12% of spinal injuries. Contact sports, meanwhile, were behind at 3%.

And the numbers:

The findings -- published online this week in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine -- come from a nationwide database tracking Americans hospitalized for traumatic injuries.

Blake Hauser and her colleagues at Harvard Medical School in Boston focused on more than 80,000 cases of sports-related injury. Of those, just over 12,000 involved trauma to the spine.

12,000 is a good sample size. Helmets help but there is a lot of exposed flesh outside of the brain bucket. At least with a motorcycle, you are wearing balistic fabric or thick leather.
