Audacity is a free Open Source program for recording and processing audio sounds. Because the source code is readily available, a lot of people have written extensions - utilities to filter the audio, add reverberation, pitch shift, noise removal, etc... It seems that some adventurous souls are saving photographic data files in specific formats, tricking Audacity into reading them as an audio file and then post-processing these files and getting some interesting results.
