Two stories about Israel today. First from CNBC:

Israeli government websites under mass hacking attack
More than 44 million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government web sites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the government said on Sunday.

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.

Typically, there are a few hundred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.

Attempts on defense-related sites have been the highest, while 10 million attempts have been made on the site of Israel's president, 7 million on the Foreign Ministry and 3 million on the site of the prime minister.

A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Israel and the Palestinian territories.

All this means is that someone is ponying up a couple bucks to lease a thousand bots around the world. This kind of attack is called a Distributed Denial of Service (DDS). Depending on the hosting computer server, a given website can only respond to so many simultaneous requests to serve a web page. If you get too many, the response time becomes so long that the visitor's browser will time out. By using bot machines to hammer a given website, this renders it unviewable by legitimate clients. This kind of attack has been around for quite a few years -- 'cmon guys, use your BRAAAIIINNNSSSSES!!!. Eleventy!!!. These are trivial to diagnose and there are a number of automated remedies to put into place. Second from Anonymous. I agree with some of what they do but they have put way too many people's lives at risk for pure ego-play on their part. They publish any data that they can get their peanut-butter and jelly stained hands on without regard to whether a person's life might be at risk from this disclosure. They would be just as effective publishing the first ten lines of a given document and saying to the party in power, we have the rest -- do this or we will publish the entire thing. They do not need to have blood on their hands. They should not be responsible for getting people being killed for their own emo gain. Anonymous really needs adult supervision. From Russia Today:

Anonymous leaks personal information of 5,000 Israeli officials
Internet hacktivist group Anonymous has declared cyberwar on Israel, posting personal data of five thousand Israeli officials online.

The group used their Anonpaste.me site to address a message to the Israeli government before linking to the page with names, ID numbers and personal emails of 5,000 officials.

The message said: "It has come to our attention that the Israeli government has ignored repeated warnings about the abuse of human rights, shutting down the internet in Israel and mistreating its own citizens and those of its neighboring countries."

Fscking pathetic.
