But a lot of fun - got up at 7:00AM and got on the road by 7:45 coffee in hand. Arrived at the event at 8:30 and the other guy (also a DaveH) was just pulling in. Took us about 20 minutes to get everything set up and signed in with Net Control. First runners came through around 9:20 or so. We needed to report the first three and the last three so the race officials could get an idea of the timing and flow. There were over 500 teams participating so it was a very large event.
Fortunately, we didn't have to participate in any first aid related events - there was an aid station set up next to us but it was just dealing with road rash and the occasional twisted ankle - no medivac this year.
Feeling tired for some strange reason - surf for a bit (grabbed a burger in town) and have a glass or three of wine.
A new radio came for me today - I had purchased a Wouxun hand-held unit and it is a great one but everyone here seems to have standardized on a Baofang so I spent my $70 and got one of those including the extra battery (high-capacity), extended antenna (longer range) and programming cable (the programming software is free and open source: Chirp). This way, people can distribute a single programming file for an event and we can all download it and program the various memory channels so we are all on the same page. It is sitting on the kitchen counter charging the battery as I type this.
Got another event tomorrow afternoon - our regional resource center is hosting an event with local resources and vendors. I will be there representing BERT and demonstrating amateur radio. This one starts at 1:00PM so I can operate on my normal schedule and do my morning run out for coffee. Don't even have to unpack the truck!
