From Akinori Goto:
The 'standard' zoetrope is two-dimensional and is viewed through the slits in a rotating wheel. This one has been 3D printed with a translucent plastic and your 'slit' is a tightly focused beam of light.
A very clever idea and an excellent realization.
Tip of the hat to David Pescovitz at BoingBoing.
