2016 strikes again but this time it is good news - RIP Fidel Castro

About time - the New York Times gives his corpse a loving tongue-bath:

Fidel Castro, Cuban Revolutionary Who Defied U.S., Dies at 90
Mr. Castro brought the Cold War to the Western Hemisphere, bedeviled 11 American presidents and briefly pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war.

Like this is a good thing... More:

Fidel Castro, the fiery apostle of revolution who brought the Cold War to the Western Hemisphere in 1959 and then defied the United States for nearly half a century as Cuba’s maximum leader, bedeviling 11 American presidents and briefly pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war, died Friday. He was 90.

His death was announced by Cuban state television.

In declining health for several years, Mr. Castro had orchestrated what he hoped would be the continuation of his Communist revolution, stepping aside in 2006 when he was felled by a serious illness. He provisionally ceded much of his power to his younger brother Raúl, now 85, and two years later formally resigned as president. Raúl Castro, who had fought alongside Fidel Castro from the earliest days of the insurrection and remained minister of defense and his brother’s closest confidant, has ruled Cuba since then, although he has told the Cuban people he intends to resign in 2018.

Why is being revolutionary a good thing? Honest question. Look at the citizens of Cuba and you see grinding poverty while the Castro family is worth well over 900 million USD (here, here, here, here). What are they doing for their citizens - why do so many of them risk life and limb to come here. Why is nobody trying to emigrate to Cuba.

Sure, Batista was corrupt but Castro was also corrupt. Batista encouraged the Miami mobsters to build in Havana during prohibition and everyone made lots of money - Batista, mobsters and citizens. Castro wanted in on this but was not able to get traction until he allied himself with the Soviets who bankrolled his takeover of Cuba. Having a KGB outpost near the USA was too tempting. Castro was just a полезные дураки. A useful fool. In 10 years, the Castro family name will be consigned to the dustbin of history.
