Since I was in the area, I stopped at a couple stores to see what "Black Friday" deals they were offering. Harbor Freight had some nice pricing on welding sticks and gloves - picked up some of each. Their gloves are actually pretty decent for the price - you need very flexible leather so you can feel what is going on. You also need to have the seams very carefully sewn with a strip of leather covering the holes. Welding creates a LOT of ultra violet light and it does not do well to give your hands a bad sunburn.
I remember this very well as a friend of mine and I went in on a small MIG welder 20 years ago. I wear open shoes and at that time was exclusively wearing TEVA's. I didn't have a suitable surface to work on (didn't want to scorch my wood workbenches) so spent the afternoon hunkered down on my haunches creating pieces of scrap metal from pieces of scrap metal and having a wonderful time. Next morning, the tops of my feet were bright red. They blistered. I learned my lesson.
Went to WalMart to get a box fan and some groceries. The guy in front of me was planning to buy a toaster but he had the shelf model in his cart, not a boxed unit for sale. The display unit had no power cord and had the plastic shelf talker glued to its bottom. He was in his 30-40's and didn't seem impaired but sheesh.
Heading out for tacos and then back home to surf. Farm sometime tomorrow.
