I am a prepper and have been involved in groups teaching other people how to prepare for emergencies. A few simple things can make a big difference between riding out an event in comfort and being totally unprepared.
This upcoming storm is a perfect example - I know that I have heat, water and some form of light. If the power goes out I have a small generator that will keep my fridge and freezer running for as long as needed. If the internet is down, I have a book I am half-way through and two more waiting (the local library system is awesome). I do not have a means of cooking as the range is electric - when I remodel the kitchen, that will be switched to propane.
I can see the forecasts and know that I will be warm, secure, comfortable and intellectually occupied. If things get too out of control, I have a ham radio to use to call for help. Our local repeater has backup power for a couple of days and I can use that to contact people outside of the affected zone.
Best definition I have heard for "an emergency" is "an event that outstrips your ability to cope".
