Had a visitor on April 25th:
From the Stanwood Camano News:
Rare visit is first confirmed island sighting in recent memory
Camano Island had an unusual visitor on Thursday when a black bear rambled around the island’s northeast end.
The rare sighting marks the first time in recent memory a bear was confirmed to have set foot on the island, according to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officials.
“I’m not aware of any bears that live on the island,” state Fish and Wildlife Sgt. Jennifer Maurstad said. “We get reports of from time to time of bears and cougars, but we haven’t had a confirmed sighting of either until Thursday.”
The bear was photographed and recorded on video walking near Smith and Juniper Beach roads. Black bears likely used to roam the island years ago, so it’s not surprising the large mammals could venture across the tidal flats to Camano — especially now.
This is about three miles from my house. I love bears but am glad that I took my bird seed feeders down a month ago. Just have the hummingbird feeders up for now.
