Insulation is supposed to be nice and fluffy for it to work - it should not be compressed when installed.
Here is what I found in my walls:
Major props to the unknown "handyman" who stapled straight through the batts fastening them to the house's sheathing. Compressed 3" of fluffy fiberglass right down to an inch or so.
As for the last pic? You do not need to trim the batts to size when installing them, just double them over and staple the whole mess to the sheathing - that is twice the insulation isn't it?
