Great online infographic from Johns Hopkins University
Coronavirus 2019-nCoV Global Cases by Johns Hopkins CSSE
At this moment it shows 31,529 confirmed cases, 638 "official" deaths, and 1,764 patients recovered.
As a matter of perspective, there is this from our own Centers for Disease Control:
2019-2020 U.S. Flu Season: Preliminary Burden Estimates
CDC estimates that, from October 1, 2019, through February 1, 2020, there have been:
-
- 22,000,000 – 31,000,000 flu illnesses
- 10,000,000 – 15,000,000 flu medical visits
- 210,000 – 370,000 flu hospitalizations
- 12,000 – 30,000 flu deaths
The takeaway is: #1) - yes, we need to be careful about the Coronavirus and monitor its spread. It is nasty and could come back and bite us sometime later now that it is resident in the population. And: #2) - the common flu is a lot deadlier. Excercise basic sanitary proceedures, avoid crowds, wash your hands regularly.
