Life in the people's republic of New York

For someone who wants to be President, Governor Cuomo is certainly acting like an ill-mannered tyrant. A two-fer:

First - how's the economy doing? From Patch:

Coronavirus Forces 100K NY Small Businesses To Close Permanently
The coronavirus crisis has forced more than 100,000 small businesses in New York to close permanently, the governor said Friday. The huge swath of closures means main streets will look at lot different when the state is allowed to reopen.

At most risk have been businesses that are owned by minorities, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

"Small businesses are taking a real beating," he said. "They are 90 percent of New York's businesses and they're facing the toughest challengers.

So then why didn't you manage the quarantine better and allow them to be open just like Walmart and Home Depot? He will be looking for a federal bail-out in 3... 2... 1...

Second - he cannot call NYC a sanctuary city any more (do this and you lose your Federal funding - Executive Order, January 25th, 2017) so he goes around the law. From the Buffalo, NY ABC affiliate WKBW:

Green Light Law amendment: Officers can be charged with felony
In April, Governor Andrew Cuomo passed the 2020 budget, and in it, an amendment was made to a law that was passed last year allowing undocumented immigrants to get a New York State driver’s license.

The Green Light Law also prohibited the sharing of DMV information to any federal agency in charge of immigration.

Last month, the original law was amended as part of the 2020 budget, now making it an E Felony for any law enforcement officer to share DMV records with another law enforcement agency in charge of immigration like ICE or DHS.

“Border Patrol for example, working the highway in the middle of the night and pulls over a vehicle, they can’t run the plates to determine who owns that vehicle,” said U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York J.P. Kennedy. “I think it’s legislating obstruction and it’s very concerning to me.”

And needless to say:

We reached out to the Governor’s office for a statement and have not heard back.

Wonder how long it will take for someone in D.C. to address that directly. New York has a history of going back and forth between Republican and Democrat Governors - it will be interesting to see what happens when Cuomo is up for re-election in 2022.
