The American people can see the difference and are not swayed by the media as much as the media would like to believe. From Eric Trump's twitter:

Some of the businesses were put into trust - Donald or any other family member can not access these funds or make business decisions. This sidesteps any problems with the emoluments clause. This is one of the plain and simple facts that the TDS sufferers choose to ignore. After the current landslide election, Donald John Trump serves us for another four years and becomes a businessman again. These trusts are disolved and he will regain control of his empire. Simple (and 100% legal) as that.
