People do not look at (they do not want to know) what goes in to making those batteries:
The rare earths are not mined in the USA because the environmentalists do not want it.
The production is shifted to China where any environmentalists are rounded up and placed in re-education camps.
Same problem with solar panels, flat-screen televisions, cell phones and most other electronics. Not only is the mining bad, the chemical processing and refining are bad too. We could do such a good job of it here - we have huge resources - but no. The environmentalists do not want this.
Re-education camps do not sound like that bad of an idea...
