97 is a good run but still...  From the New York Post:

Legendary airman Chuck Yeager dead at 97
Legendary airman Chuck Yeager — the first pilot in history confirmed to break the sound barrier — died Monday, his wife announced. He was 97.

“It is w/ profound sorrow, I must tell you that my life love General Chuck Yeager passed just before 9pm ET,” Victoria Yeager wrote on her husband’s verified Twitter account.

“An incredible life well lived, America’s greatest Pilot, & a legacy of strength, adventure, & patriotism will be remembered forever.”

She gave no details on the cause of her husband’s death.

A World War II fighter pilot, Yeager was propelled into history by breaking the sound barrier in the experimental Bell X-1 research aircraft in October 1947 over Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California.

The embodiment of The Right Stuff. One of the greats.
