A local historian is giving a talk about this area. Maple Falls used to be a city of 9,000 people. Now? About 300 with about 4,000 living in a ten mile radius in several gated communities and other small towns. The major industries were timber, limestone (for cement) and gold (and coal) mining. There is still timber extraction (helps to fund the public school system) and one gold mine in operation. The coal mining has been shut down.
Should be fun - back this afternoon...
